August DCM
MC, Westlake High, D42E
Westlake High School Key Club members and officers always love coming to DCMs, and last month’s August DCM was particularly memorable. Officers and members from different schools gathered at Conejo Creek North Park on Saturday, August 27th for our monthly DCMs as well as a rock painting service project. Each school gave updates on their current Key Club activities, and awards were also handed out. WHS Key Club also won “Club of the Month” for August and was able to bring “Ned the Narwhal” to our school! After the DCM portion, all of the members and officers gathered to help paint rocks for the kindness rock garden. Students could paint positive pictures or messages onto their rocks using the various art supplies provided by the Kiwanis Advisor. Kindness rocks are a great way to brighten up people’s day, and painting them during the August DCM was not only meaningful but also very fun!
August DCM
JH, Pacifica, D42W
On August 20, four Pacifica cabinet members attended the August DCM that was hosted at the kidSTREAM building in Camarillo. Our LTG Sofia began the meeting by discussing the division’s progress on PTP funds, officer submissions, and a new implementation to the division that recognizes clubs based on the points they earn. President Hazel was recognized by the division for her dedication to the club and received one of five gift bags, which we were able to enjoy together. The game portion was inspired by the hit-show “Jeopardy!” making this DCM my favorite one by far, especially since I was able to bond with members from both D42W and the Turquoise Kiwins. Team two, or Hannah Montana, started the game off rough as we were in last place with negative two-hundred points; but as the game progressed, all attendees were laughing and becoming more competitive. Our team pulled through and advanced to the “fast money” round. With a comeback as one of the top teams, the pressure was increasing on us. I was appointed by my team to play in the fast money round against a member from the top team, Key Club 4 Life. Some questions that were asked included, “What do you never leave your house without?” and “What don’t you want to find swimming in your bathtub?” were asked. As a shock to the audience, my contestant and I were tied for the fast money round with a total of 102 points each. I ended up losing the second tie breaker, however it does not invalidate how much fun I had at this past DCM! My group members were very enthusiastic and cheered each other on along the way, and I couldn’t have asked for a better time! Hopefully we have more collaborations with the lovely Kiwins in the future.
Rock Painting
SS, Spanish Spring, D23
The rock painting DCM was so much fun. As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed by all of the very kind members. Everyone had a smile on their face and truly seemed to be happy to be there. All of the members of my group were all so kind and made that day really enjoyable. After we finished painting rocks, we played some games, had some laughs, and made some new friends. I know that by the end, we were all truly happy to be a part of Key Club
La Verne Grand Prix
NK, BHS, D35E
I have been cycling as a sport and hobby for several years now, so I was so excited when I heard that Key Club would be volunteering at a bike race. Even better, it was local, so I would not have to drive for 30 minutes as I do for other events. The event did not disappoint; watching the La Verne Grand Prix while earning service and helping the race run smoothly was great. For a few hours, Josh and I stood on the road guiding cars that needed to cross the course. It was interesting to run after cars to yell at them to let them know not to enter the course. Because I had brought my bike, I was also tasked with delivering water and messages to other volunteers stationed around the course. Pizza and donuts were also bought for us in the afternoon, but I had already bought tacos from a taco van, which were amazing. And of course, it was greatly rewarding to see all our hard work make the race possible.
Football Volunteering Event
SB, Eleanor Roosevelt, D15S
During the month of August, Eleanor Roosevelts Key Club had a football volunteering event! This event occurred at our home football stadium, during our school’s first football game! On August 19th, we got to work with our school’s Football Booster organization for the event to happen. Our officers and members were in charge of putting athlete banners on the gate and taking them down after the event. Our club was able to be more involved within our school and help out with major school events. This event allowed us to greater our relationship with the Football Booster’s organization as they invited us to volunteer at every home game!
