Carnival Crew
VV, Independence, D12E
Carnival Crew was a fun event that allowed for community bonding. Despite the hot weather from the heat wave, there was a lot of turnout with many families in attendance. Volunteers helped with manning various games and food booth stands throughout the event. I was tasked with manning Connect 4. It was extremely fun and heartwarming to play against/with children and give them prizes at the end. All the children were so sweet too! It’s definitely an event I would volunteer at again.
Lowell Bake Sale
NN, Lowell, D34N
On the weekend of July 7th, Lowell Key Club hosted a bake sale to raise money for various causes such as lowering the costs of FRN for members and for future bondings. At the corner of West Portal, Lowell Key Club sold multiple different baked goods which included, ube shortbread cookies, oatmeal raisin, and sugar. The most popular were the banana bread and chocolate chip cookies which actually sold out. They fundraised from 11am - 2pm and were able to raise over $200 after costs were accounted for. Lowell Key Club hosted this bake sale as not only a fundraiser but a sort of bonding event for the officers. Officers were able to connect and inform the public on Key Club and what Key Club does. There was a lot of support from neighbors and even a previous Lowell Key Club president.
SpaceLanders
RL, Walnut, D35E
Walnut Key Club members collaborated with STEMsters, a STEM-focused non-profit organization, on Friday, June 14, at Hacienda Heights.
STEMsters first involved members in teaching the children about ships that landed astronauts on the moon or Space Landers. Key Clubbers also provided fill-in-the-blank worksheets and helped present colorful lessons that taught the children the science behind the various items they would create.
“Working on the Space Landers task, I thought that it was a fun approach towards teaching science and engineering,” cabinet leader Kyle Le said. “The kids were able to develop their motor and leadership skills and work alongside one another, so the experience helped them build character.”
Ellies then helped guide and direct the main event, the arts and crafts lesson, showing the children how to design their own Space Landers with boxes. They offered materials such as cardboard, paper, tape, cups, straws, and marshmallows, which served as the astronauts.
“It felt rewarding watching the kids make their Space Landers," cabinet leader Elaine Zhu said. "I enjoyed volunteering with my friends and sparking the students' interests in STEM."
After the kids finished their projects, the boxes were dropped from a height, and whichever box survived with the most marshmallows would win. Ultimately, working alongside STEMsters’ representatives allowed Key Clubbers to interact with other club volunteers and create unforgettable childhood memories for the students they aided.
Water Lantern Festival
ML, Rosemead, D10S
The month of June means the amazing Water Lantern Festival. Water Lantern Festival happens semi-annually at the Whitter Narrows Recreation Area. We volunteer on June 21st and June 23rd from 3:30 pm to 11:30 pm. This service allowed volunteers to earn a total of 8 service hours per day they volunteered. At the Lantern Festival, people create paper lanterns from kits sold online, and when it turns 8 pm, the event's “letting go” ceremony begins. At the festival, our volunteers were split into different groups to tackle different duties. There was a group of volunteers for checking in the people. There was another group to help pick up trash around the park and lake area. Lastly, there was a group helping maintain the parking lot and ensuring there was no traffic around the area and everyone could park. At the end of the night, our volunteers cleaned out the lake and all the lanterns. We all did a walk around the park to make sure there was no more trash left behind. These two days were very exciting and busy for our Rosemead Key Clubbers.
